A Game of Fashion

Brace yourselves: A Game of Thrones clothing line is coming.

Actually, it’s already here. After much anticipation, Australian casualwear manufacturer Black Milk Clothing released its new womenswear collection based on the HBO hit show (an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s bestselling “A Song of Ice and Fire” fantasy novels) on March 10.

The clothing line can be broken down into four groups:

  • Clash of the Kings: Features sigils from the four major houses of the fictional land of Westeros (i.e., Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Targaryen).
  • Dragon Egg Patterns: Inspired by Daenerys, queen of Targaryen and her beloved dragons, available in green (Rhaegal) and red/maroon (Drogon). Black Milk Clothing even uses a Daenerys lookalike in its promo.
  • Map of Westeros: Includes leggings, a form-fitting mini-dress or a reversible skater dress made out of the map of Westeros, allowing the wearer to arrive at King’s Landing in style.
  • Shooters (or basketball uniform tops): Available in four different styles, featuring the four houses from the Clash of Kings line. The capital city of each house is emblazoned across the top of the garment.

What do you think? Do you look for inspiration in pop culture? Black Milk Clothing certainly produced a fun line, but not without making a few marketing mistakes. While the company’s execution was perfectly timed (Season 4 of GoT premieres on April 6), their pricing could use some work—$85 AUD (that’s $77.56 USD) for a pair of leggings made from a polyester/elastane blend? No, thank you.

Limited quantities are another problem. Twelve out of 37 pieces are already sold out (the site specifies that eight of those pieces will be available after sewing is complete). Not surprisingly, all leggings are still in stock.

Good luck with your next bold adventure! And if you need something to hold you over until the big April premier, check out Black Milk Clothing’s promo video below.
